We are commissioning an upgrade to our GDS triaxial cell, referred to as a DigiRFM, which gives much greater responsiveness when carrying out stress-controlled tests. In the context of drained static liquefaction triggering, this enables constant shear drained (CSD) and lateral extrusion (LE) tests to be done with the benefits of servo-control (area correction, active control of stress) along with the rapid failure that occurs when using weights. The limitations of using weights (time consuming, HSE, drifting load) are removed, making this form of testing quicker and easier to carry out.
Below is a video of the failure, the stress path and strain for the test, and a pictures of the sample after liquefaction and then after reconsolidation just prior to being frozen.
